Sofreye Haft Sin<\/h2>\n

Sofreh is a Persian tablecloth.<\/p>\n

On this tablecloth 7 symbolic elements are dished up for<\/p>\n

Norooz<\/a><\/strong> our Persian New Year,<\/p>\n

which begin with the letter “S” in Farsi.<\/p>\n

The number seven is a sacred number.<\/p>\n

\"HaftSABZEH<\/h2>\n

Sabzeh is sprouted wheat, barley, or lentils and symbolizes<\/p>\n

vivacity and vitality.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SIR<\/h2>\n

Sir is the garlic and symbolizes health and protection.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SUMACH<\/h2>\n

Sumac is a Spice and represents the taste of life.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SIB<\/h2>\n

Sib is the apple and represents health.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SENJED<\/h2>\n

Senjed is a dried flour berry and stands for the love and joy of life.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SERKEH<\/h2>\n

Serkeh is vinegar and is a symbol of patience and long life.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SAMANU<\/h2>\n

Samanu – is a sweet produced in a very time-consuming process<\/p>\n

from wheat germ and wheat flour.<\/p>\n

It symbolizes blessings and good fortune.<\/p>\n

Eating it is supposed to bring joy and sweetness<\/p>\n

to life in the New Year.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SONBOL<\/h2>\n

Sonbol is a hyacinth, and it symbolizes friendship.<\/p>\n

Most Persians add other symbolic objects to their Haft Sin.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SEKEH<\/h2>\n

Sekeh, the silver coin symbolizes financial prosperity.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

AYENEH<\/h2>\n

Ayeneh, the mirror symbolizes pureness and honesty.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

SHAMH<\/h2>\n

Shamh is the candle that symbolizes sacred fire,<\/p>\n

enlightenment, and happiness.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

TOKHM-E MORGH<\/h2>\n

Tokhm-e Morgh is a colorful egg and symbolizes fertility.<\/p>\n

I have dyed the eggs with a natural color (cochineal).<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

MAHI<\/h2>\n

Mahi are goldfish in water and symbolize happiness.<\/p>\n

After the holidays, you have to put them in a stream or lake.<\/p>\n

When my husband and I celebrated Nowrooz together for the first time,<\/p>\n

I arrived home with some goldfish for my Haft Sin.<\/p>\n

Of course I brought a round jar, the Iranian style I knew from Iran.<\/p>\n

My husband was horrified and said that the poor fishes must<\/p>\n

swim in circles in such a small glass.<\/p>\n

He was not able to accept that.<\/p>\n

He took a look at the whole thing for a few minutes and<\/p>\n

immediately went to the aquarium dealer.<\/p>\n

He asked him if it was acceptable to keep the goldfish in this way.<\/p>\n

Of course, he then came home with a large aquarium and all the<\/p>\n

accessories and started to set up everything on my Haft Sin.<\/p>\n

Please imagine now an aquarium with heater, pump, lamp, etc.<\/p>\n

on my beautifully decorated table.<\/p>\n

I can still laugh about this today.<\/p>\n

Since then, we no longer have goldfish on our Haft Sin.<\/p>\n

GOLAB<\/h2>\n

Golab is rose water, a symbol of spiritual power and purification.<\/p>\n

\"Haft<\/p>\n

KETAB<\/h2>\n

Ketab is a book.<\/p>\n

It symbolizes wisdom and knowledge.<\/p>\n

This can be the Avesta, Shahname of Ferdowsi,<\/p>\n

Divan of Hafez or the Koran.<\/p>\n

FURTHER ADDITIONS<\/h2>\n

Usually, the Haft Sin is completed with Toot<\/a><\/strong> and Ajil<\/a><\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n

Besides, we put pictures of family members on the Haft Sin<\/p>\n

with whom one cannot celebrate.<\/p>\n
