Here\u2019s the thing\u2014Sosis Bandari is a little different from the classic currywurst. It\u2019s usually served as a sandwich! In Iran, you\u2019ll find a \u201cSandewich Forooshi\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cSandewichi\u201d<\/strong> on every corner, and nothing beats a Sandewich-e Sosis Bandari when you\u2019re in a rush. Just take half a baguette<\/a><\/strong>, load it up with a big ladle of spicy Sosis Bandari and hot sauce, then pile on crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, some fresh herbs (I go with parsley), and salty cucumber. Fold that baby up, open your mouth wide, and take a massive bite! Trust me, this combo is pure perfection.<\/p>\n “Sosis”<\/strong> means sausage, and “Bandari”<\/strong> means from the port, so this dish is often called “sausage from the port.” It comes from the port city of Bandar Abbas, right on the Persian Gulf. Persians love to visit here in the winter, where the temperatures are a comfortable 25\u00b0 to 28\u00b0. In the summer, though, it shoots up to 45\u00b0, with a sticky humidity that makes it feel even hotter!<\/p>\n The women in Bandar Abbas wear bright, colorful clothes, and some even wear the traditional Borkeh face mask. Many visitors take boats from here to the beautiful Hormoz or Qeshm Islands. Qeshm Island<\/a><\/strong> sits in the Strait of Hormoz and is a popular free trade zone, but it also offers stunning natural beauty, especially in the mangrove reserves. The island of Hormoz<\/a><\/strong>, once ruled by the Portuguese in the 15th century, has some fascinating ruins to explore.<\/p>\n The area is full of date palms and mangoes, which inspire some amazing local dishes. I\u2019ve got a few date recipes for you to try, like a Sweet Date Omelette and Date Jam<\/a><\/strong>, Komaj – Saffron Rolls stuffed with Dates and Walnuts<\/a><\/strong>, and Marzipan stuffed Dates<\/a><\/strong>. And of course, I have a classic Bandari dish for you too: Ghalieh Meygoo \u2013 Persian Shrimp in a Tamarind and Cilantro Sauce<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n For thousands of years, Bandar Abbas has been a busy hub of maritime trade between India, Arabia, and Africa. This vibrant trading history has shaped the region, creating a multicultural mix of Arab, African, and Indian immigrants. You’ll find Indo-Iranians and many Afro-Iranians here. My paternal family actually comes from the Indo-Iranians, who moved from India to Persia many generations ago.<\/p>\n The people of Bandar Abbas are incredibly warm-hearted, and they absolutely love music, dance, and colorful clothes. Bandari music is my favorite\u2014it\u2019s so lively and infectious, you just can’t resist dancing along!<\/p>\n The musical performances of the Shanbezadeh Ensemble<\/a><\/strong> are absolutely stunning. They\u2019re one of the best-known music groups from southern Iran. The ensemble is made up of a father, mother, and son who now live in Paris but perform together all over the world. They\u2019ll be in Berlin this October, and if you\u2019re in the city, you definitely shouldn\u2019t miss it!<\/p>\n Saeid Shanbehzadeh<\/strong>, from Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, plays the neyanban<\/strong>, a goatskin bagpipe, while singing and dancing along. His son Naghib<\/strong> joins in with his daboukas<\/strong> (small drums typical of the region), and his wife Sheida<\/strong> dances<\/strong> and adds joyful shouts<\/strong> to the music.
