But there&#8217;s so much more to this city than just beer and pretzels! This weekend, my mom, our little one, and I are heading out to explore lively Munich while visiting my eldest son. We\u2019ll be discovering some of my favorite spots on foot. The Town Hall&#8217;s tower houses the famous Glockenspiel, which comes to life every day at 12 noon and 6 p.m. with 43 bells and 32 colorful figures performing the Sch\u00e4ffler dance. Sure, it\u2019s a bit touristy and can get crowded, but I\u2019ve got a soft spot for these main attractions, just as much as the hidden gems. Plus, let\u2019s be honest\u2014who can resist watching those little figures dance? DELICACIES<\/h2>\n<p>We stroll through the state courtyard, and as soon as we pass through the gate, we spot it: the yellow <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallmayr.com\/de\/\">Dallmayr flagship store<\/a><\/strong>, Germany\u2019s famous delicatessen. My mom has been a die-hard Dallmayr coffee fan for over 40 years, but getting her favorite brew in Tehran? Not so easy! Whenever I or friends fly to Tehran, at least five packs of Dallmayr Prodomo are always in our luggage. So naturally, I decide to make her day by heading to the store.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, we\u2019re blown away by the different gourmet sections \u2013 it\u2019s a dream for any foodie! We settle down at the caf\u00e9-bistro, order some delicious coffee, and soak in the view of the Frauenkirche. As someone who loves to cook, I\u2019m always drawn to markets in different cities. You can learn so much about a country\u2019s food culture just by wandering through its stalls. The vibe at Viktualienmarkt is fantastic! You\u2019ll find everything here\u2014fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, spices, flowers, and more. It\u2019s a treasure trove of Bavarian and international treats. After soaking in all the sights (and smells), our stomachs start growling. Time to find a cozy spot to sit and eat\u2014it\u2019s impossible to leave this place without feeling hungry!<\/p>\n<p>By chance, we come across Munich\u2019s smallest restaurant and fuel up on tasty Wei\u00dfwurst &#8211; veal sausages, sweet mustard, and pretzels. The waiters are super quick, and the prices? Not bad at all for Munich! We settle in for a while, right in the middle of the lively Viktualienmarkt, watching the world go by and sipping our beer under the chestnut trees. We strike up easy conversations with locals and tourists alike. Then, out of the blue, who do we see strolling by? None other than TV chef Stefan Marquard! It&#8217;s one of those unexpected moments that makes the day even more fun.<\/p>\n<p>We take a stroll to check out the beautiful fountains, each dedicated to one of Munich\u2019s six famous personalities. My favorite is the Ida Schumacher fountain\u2014she was a well-known Bavarian comedian. We continue our relaxed walk toward the southern end of the market, passing by Eataly, a fantastic Italian delicatessen and restaurant located in the Schrannenhallen. It\u2019s hard not to stop in, but we keep moving\u2014still, it\u2019s definitely worth a visit if you\u2019re craving Italian treats!<\/p>\n<p><a I absolutely love unique shops, and this area is full of them. One of my all-time favorites is \u201c<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.delikatessen-089.de\/Seiten-089\/S-Sitzen\/delikatessen-089_sitzen02.html\">Delikatessen<\/a><\/strong>\u201d on Reichenbachstrasse. It&#8217;s like stepping into a design time capsule, filled with 50s and 60s classics\u2014lamps, chairs, tables, and all sorts of cool furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Another gem is \u201cMilk,\u201d which has amazing boho fashion, jewelry, porcelain, and even vintage furniture. The best part? You can buy almost everything in the store, including the displays, so it\u2019s constantly changing and always has a fresh look.<\/p>\n<p>At the &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.capricorn-store.com\/\">Capricorn Store<\/a><\/strong>,&#8221; a quirky second-hand shop, I nearly lost my cool when I spotted the luxurious roundie beach towel from &#8220;The Beach People.&#8221; This towel, straight from Australia, is the ultimate must-have for the beach and vacation right now\u2014massive, soft, and totally cuddle-worthy. I didn\u2019t hesitate for a second before snatching up the \u201cTulum\u201d roundie and practically skipped out of the store, grinning like a kid with candy.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e4rtnerplatz is packed with cool caf\u00e9s and restaurants. When a sudden downpour hit, we barely made it to the trendy caf\u00e9 \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotidiano.de\">Cotidiano &#8211; The Bakery Restaurant<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d It\u2019s so popular, you might even spot a Bayern M\u00fcnchen Foodball player hanging out! As soon as we walk in, we\u2019re greeted by the smell of freshly baked bread, muffins, croissants, Belgian waffles, and tartines\u2014it\u2019s heaven for the nose and the stomach! We grab a seat and dive into a delicious tabouleh salad, tarte flamb\u00e9e, and some homemade muffins. G\u00e4rtnerplatz itself is beautifully designed, shaped like a star with streets that lead out in every direction\u2014towards the Isar, Isartor, and Sendlinger Tor. I absolutely love the old-school charm here\u2014it feels like stepping back in time on every corner. The Hackenviertel is a dream for interior design lovers, so it\u2019s perfect for me! One of the highlights is &#8220;Radspieler,&#8221; a traditional Munich furniture store inside a gorgeous old yellow palace. I can\u2019t stop marveling at how beautifully everything is arranged\u2014stunning furniture, fabrics, and home accessories, all perfectly displayed. The mix of traditional and modern stores here is just perfect.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re into antiques, here are my secret spots: \u201cDie Alte Zeit\u201d and \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerdismaenner.com\">Gerdism\u00e4nner Interieurs &amp; Accessoires,<\/a><\/strong>\u201d where I\u2019ve found some amazing treasures from the past. I could easily lose track of time in \u201cBottles &amp; Glashaus,\u201d which is packed with cool finds like apothecary bottles, jars, and swing-top bottles. A few years ago, the Isar was renaturalized, and now it looks so wild and natural, like it\u2019s always been this way. We stroll along the river, passing by St. Lukas Church, heading toward Praterinsel. The alpine vibe along the Isar makes it hard to believe we\u2019re still in a big city!<\/p>\n<p>We find a sunny spot on Praterinsel, lie down, and relax to the soothing sound of the water. Our tired feet get a cool dip in the river. It\u2019s such a cool experience to be chilling by waterfalls in the heart of a big city, just letting the river carry you along. But, as much as we wanted to stay, our peaceful break was cut short when the rain started up again. So, we decide to walk over to watch the Eisbach surfers. The English Garden is to Munich what Central Park is to New Yorkers\u2014it\u2019s where everyone goes to hang out. We could easily spend hours watching the surfers ride the waves, but we move on and head to Fr\u00e4ulein Gr\u00fcneis. Sandra and Henning D\u00fcrr have lovingly restored this old kiosk and now serve delicious organic, local food. If you\u2019re up for more exploring, you can even borrow one of their cute bikes and ride along the Eisbach to discover more of the English Garden.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m amazed at how huge the English Garden is! With its peaceful waterfalls, lakes, and bridges, it really feels like we\u2019re in the middle of nature. The rain has cleared the air, and it smells so fresh\u2014the scent of wet earth and plants is just magical. From the \u201cMonopteros\u201d hill, there\u2019s a stunning view of the onion domes of St. Mary\u2019s Church and the Munich skyline.<\/p>\n<p>We cycle past the Chinese Tower, with its massive beer garden, and head towards the Seehaus, where you can sit right by the lake or rent a pedal boat. But we keep going, leaving the English Garden behind as we head towards Schwabing.
