*Press Trip Frankfurt Cider World 2026*

When Frankfurt’s historic Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten transforms into a buzzing hub of flavor, you know it’s time for Cider World. This past weekend, the grand venue became the ultimate destination for anyone searching for something truly special in their glass. One of the most exciting things to witness was the changing face of the crowd. Beneath the magnificent crystal chandeliers, there was a noticeable surge of young enthusiasts—especially a new generation of men who have embraced cider and apple wine as a modern lifestyle drink.

At the tasting tables, the passion of the producers was palpable. It was a chance to dive deep into a world of unique aromas alongside fellow fans. The energy was clear: Frankfurt’s traditional “Stöffche” (apple wine) has officially taken its place on the global stage. So, grab a glass of cider—whether you prefer it full-strength or sparkling alcohol-free—settle in, and join me as I walk you through my top discoveries from Cider World 2026!

THE VISIONARY BEHIND THE FAIR – MICHAEL STÖCKL

When people talk about the Cider World, one name stands above the rest: Michael Stöckl. As the founder and driving force of the event, he is the man who has successfully turned Frankfurt into the unofficial global capital of cider. Stöckl is far more than just an organizer; he is a passionate ambassador who has rescued apple wine from its dusty niche and catapulted it onto the grand international stage.

With a keen eye for quality and emerging trends, he has built a global network that bridges the gap between traditional orchards in the Hessian countryside and cutting-edge craft cider producers from Scandinavia to the Americas. For him, cider is a cultural treasure that deserves the same level of respect and expertise as the world’s finest wines. This commitment to excellence is reinforced year after year through his close collaboration with the prestigious Geisenheim University. Without his vision and dedication, the incredible diversity we experienced at the Palmengarten in 2026 would be hard to imagine

A UNIVERSE OF POSSIBILITIES – APPLE WINE VS. CIDER

A common misconception is that all apple-based drinks are the same. While Apple Wine and Cider are closely related, they represent two very different philosophies.

The classic Hessian “Schoppen” (local apple wine) is typically still, celebrated for its sharp, crisp acidity, and traditionally served in a stone jug known as a Bembel. On the other hand, international Cider usually brings the sparkle. It’s often carbonated and plays with a vast spectrum of residual sweetness and complex fruit aromas. At Cider World, these two worlds collide to create a masterpiece of variety.

The true fascination lies in the creative freedom of the craft. Unlike traditional winemaking, which is often strictly tied to specific grape varieties and regional regulations, the world of apples knows almost no boundaries. From ancient wild crabapples and high-tannin cider apples to modern cultivars—if it grows on a tree and has character, it can be turned into a premium drink.

Ultimately, Cider World proves that this is about more than just quenching your thirst. It’s about true craftsmanship, terroir, and the delicate art of capturing the soul of the apple in a bottle.

THE ROAD TO GOLD – WHERE SCIENCE MEETS TASTE

The crowning moment of the event is the presentation of the coveted Cider World Awards. Here, winning is never a matter of luck. To even be considered for a medal, producers must first submit their entries to the world-renowned Geisenheim University.

In close collaboration with industry experts, each product undergoes a rigorous sensory and analytical examination under the strictest scientific conditions. This means a Gold Medal at Cider World is far more than just a trophy—it is a prestigious seal of quality backed by one of the most respected institutions in viticulture and beverage technology. It’s the ultimate proof that the product in your glass is truly world-class.

A DEBUT FOR THE PEAR – “SPARKLING PERRY”

A true first at Cider World 2026 was the introduction of the “Sparkling Perry” category. This addition finally brought sparkling pear wines into the well-deserved limelight. For Michael Stöckl, this step was long overdue; he sees enormous, often underestimated potential in the pear.

While classic apple cider typically dominates the scene, Perry brings a unique elegance and entirely new flavor profiles to the glass. Its delicate sweetness and refined tannins offer a sophisticated alternative that surprised even the most seasoned palates at the fair.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERTISE – THE VERDICT OF 30 JUDGES

This year, the jury was more international than ever before. Renowned experts like Brighid O’Keane (USA), Marco Mafrini (Italy), and Thomas Digervold (Norway)—alongside the French duo Benoît Marinos and Virginie Thomas, and Switzerland’s Paolo Spagnolo—brought fresh, global perspectives to the evaluation process.

For co-organizer Christine Isensee-Kiesau, this global viewpoint is vital. It provides producers with invaluable feedback on how their craftsmanship stands up on the world stage. The festive award ceremony itself was hosted by none other than the UK’s own Gabe Cook, “The Ciderologist.” With his signature British wit and infectious passion for both cider and perry, he kept the audience captivated from start to finish.

MEET THEE CHAMPIONS OF CIDER WORLD 2026

The moment everyone was waiting for! The announcement of the Gold Medal winners is the climax of the event. In a field packed with world-class entries, these producers truly stood out, impressing both the international jury and the scientists from Geisenheim.

A major trend this year was the incredible dominance of Norwegian ciders, alongside a strong showing from innovative German cideries that are breaking tradition to set new global standards.

Here are the proud winners of the Cider World Medal 2026 in Gold:

  • Still Cider: RedLove – Mausser Most (Styria, Austria)
  • Sparkling Cider: Trell – Sandalen Gard (Norway)
  • Sparkling Perry: Birnensecco 2024 – Gutshof Kraatz (Brandenburg, Germany)
  • Mixed & Flavoured: Wilder Cider – MainSchmecker (Franconia, Germany)
  • Dessert & Fortified: Elodie Ice Cider – Eiane Gard (Norway)
  • Non-Alcoholic: Classic Rocco – Sparkling Rocco (South Tyrol, Italy)

TOPA! THE BASQUE COUNTRY AS GUEST OF HONOR

For its 18th appearance at the fair, Cider World channeled the vibrant energy of Basque hospitality. The Basque Country—the region surrounding the iconic cities of San Sebastián and Bilbao—shone as this year’s official Guest of Honor.

The undisputed star of the show, Sagardo, captivated the crowd. This traditional Basque apple wine carries a world-renowned reputation for its bold, characterful production and deep roots in Northern Spanish culture. With a spirited cry of “Topa!” (Basque for “Cheers!”), attendees celebrated the local sidra culture in style. Two producers particularly stood out:

  • Zapiain Sagardoa clinched a Gold Medal for their Premium 2025, proving the exceptional quality of high-altitude Basque apples.
  • The historic house of Petritegi also impressed, taking home Silver for their Petri Sidra 0.0 de Brindar—an alcohol-free masterpiece that seamlessly translates centuries of tradition into a modern, refreshing experience.

THE “TXOTX” RITUAL – A HIGH-POURING KICK-OFF

A true highlight took place just a few days before the main event: an authentic cellar tasting at the Bornheimer Ratskeller brought the traditional “Txotx” ritual straight to the heart of Frankfurt.

Normally, this custom marks the season’s premiere in the Sagardotegiaks (cider houses) tucked away in the countryside of San Sebastián—specifically in the Gipuzkoa province and towns like Astigarraga. During the ceremony, the cellar master cracks open the barrels with a loud cry of “Txotx!”, sending the Sagardo (Basque cider) shooting out in a high arc. Guests then catch the stream directly in their glasses to aerate the cider and release its full aroma.

It was the perfect prelude, celebrating Basque hospitality and joie de vivre in Frankfurt long before the fair doors even opened.

CIDER STAR OF THE YEAR 2026 – HARITZ RODRIGUEZ

One of the most emotional highlights of this year’s fair was the presentation of the Cider Star of the Year 2026 award to Haritz Rodriguez.

A native of the Basque Country and widely known as the “Ciderzale,” Rodriguez is far more than just an expert. As a journalist, marketing consultant, and passionate travel blogger, he serves as a vital global link for the entire industry. His tireless dedication is focused on reviving local cider traditions and building a worldwide network of producers. Seeing his commitment honored on the international stage in Frankfurt was a truly moving moment for everyone involved.

MY PERSONAL FAVORITES

THE ART OF ALCOHOL-FREE CIDER BY JÖRG GEIGER

Forget the idea that premium taste requires alcohol. This year, Jörg Geiger from Swabia completely stole the show with his incredible non-alcoholic ciders. As the master of the “PriSecco,” Geiger harnesses heritage meadow fruits, wild herbs, and spices to craft a complexity that rivals world-class wines. His creations pop with flavor, offering a multi-layered experience that stands toe-to-toe with any traditional cider. These aren’t just alternatives; they are masterpieces in their own right.

My top picks:

  • Craft Cider Original [most]: Delivers a robust punch of hand-picked heirloom apples and pears (contains alcohol).
  • Organic Cuvée of Wine Pears: Blends three distinct pear varieties into a sophisticated, elegant finish (contains alcohol).
  • WiesenObst Cider: Captures the pure, mild essence of the orchard in a refreshing non-alcoholic format.
  • “Sommerbirne” (Summer Pear): Combines pear, chamomile, and linden blossom to create pure summer in a glass (alcohol-free).

ROCCO – RED PERFECTION FROM SOUTH TYROL

If you’re looking for a showstopper, look no further than Cider Rocco from South Tyrol. This drink doesn’t just taste incredible; it creates a literal “explosion” of flavor.

What’s the secret? Rocco comes from red-fleshed apples. This gives the cider a stunning, vibrant ruby-red color that looks spectacular in the glass. But it’s more than just a visual highlight—the natural tannins from the red apples provide a sophisticated, dry grip and a burst of fruity freshness. It perfectly captures that crisp, alpine lifestyle.

A massive congratulations to the team for securing the Gold Medal in the Non-Alcoholic category. It is a well-deserved win for a truly innovative drink!

WILD CREATIONS FROM THE FAR NORTH – FINLAND & NORWAY

From the heart of Seinäjoki/Ylistaro, Finland, the Pirula cidery brought a rebellious craft vibe to Frankfurt. Their series—featuring Pirula Renata, Nocturne, and Paradisus—proves that Finnish apples develop an incredibly intense aroma thanks to the endless light of the northern summer days. These handcrafted premium ciders are bold, wild, and brilliantly unconventional.

Further west, in the picturesque Norwegian village of Balestrand, you’ll find Ciderhuset. Behind their Balholm brand lies a truly inspiring success story. An immigrant family from Turkey has found their calling here, mastering the art of “Champagne-style” cider.

Their estate is more than just a cidery; it’s a full sensory experience that blends Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with historical hikes, cooking classes, and tastings. This unique approach clearly pays off—the family celebrated an impressive haul of two Silver medals and one Bronze this year. Huge congratulations on this fantastic achievement!

FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF ARMENIA TO THE HILLS OF GALICIA

Villa Armos from Armenia was a true revelation this year. As the very first cider producer in the country, they prove that one of the world’s oldest winemaking nations also knows how to lead the way in apple wine. Their craft ciders exude elegance, offering a unique, almost exotic fruitiness that reflects the soul of the Armenian highlands.

Moving to the green landscapes of Galicia, Spain, Maeloc truly impressed the crowd. Their Sidra Dulce Ecologica stands out as a premium organic cider, balancing a delicate sweetness with sustainable production. It offers a smooth, honest, and refreshing taste of Northern Spain in every sip.

CZECH INNOVATION MEETS FRENCH FINESSE

Cousins Cider from the Czech Republic caused a real stir this year. By sweeping up both Gold and Silver medals, they proved that Eastern European ciders are currently making a massive leap in quality. Their success marks them as a serious contender on the international stage.

For those craving a touch of French flair, Cidres Kystin was the place to be. Hailing from Brittany, these creators push the boundaries of tradition by infusing their ciders with extraordinary ingredients like cinnamon, hibiscus, and honey. These bottles are essentially “liquid desserts”—sophisticated, highly elegant, and perfectly balanced.

FRANKFURT ORIGINALS – BEMBEL-STYLE VESPA AND LOCAL ICONS

It was a home game for the Hessians, and they certainly delivered! Outside the venue, the Bembelroller stole the spotlight—a custom Vespa decked out in the iconic blue-and-white “Bembel” pattern. This stylish ride is even available to rent for events, making it a total must-have for anyone who lives and breathes the Frankfurt lifestyle.

On the traditional side, Lorsbacher Thal from the famous Sachsenhausen district proved why they remain a local legend. Through their project “Daheim im Lorsbacher” and their exceptional house-made Schoppen, they showcased the very best of Frankfurt’s tavern culture. Their apple wine is honest, incredibly drinkable, and serves as the ultimate gold standard for classic Frankfurt flavor.

FINAL THOUGHTS – THE WORLD IN A GLASS

Cider World 2026 at the Frankfurt Palmengarten was a resounding success and a true celebration for cider lovers everywhere. This event proved once again that the apple is, without a doubt, the most versatile fruit on the planet. Whether it’s a rugged craft cider from the North or a refined sparkling pear wine from the South, the diversity is limitless.

Until next time… Topa!

Susan
