Sosis Bandari – Persian Style Currywurst

Sosis Bandari - Persian Style Currywurst

Sosis Bandari is a Persian fast food favorite that everyone loves—young and old! It’s basically a Persian-style curry sausage, often found in snack bars, but trust me, homemade is where the magic happens. The trick to great Sosis Bandari – Persian Style Currywurst? It needs to be spicy! Hot Chilli Frankfurter beef sausage is perfect for this since it’s already got some kick. If you can’t find it, Turkish sucuk works too. The sauce? Oh, it’s creamy, thick, and bursting with flavor, thanks to tomato paste, turmeric, and paprika. Some folks add diced potatoes, but the classic version skips them. Best part? It’s cheap, easy, and super quick to whip up!

SANDEWICH-E SOSIS BANDARI

Here’s the thing—Sosis Bandari is a little different from the classic currywurst. It’s usually served as a sandwich! In Iran, you’ll find a “Sandewich Forooshi” or “Sandewichi” on every corner, and nothing beats a Sandewich-e Sosis Bandari when you’re in a rush. Just take half a baguette, load it up with a big ladle of spicy Sosis Bandari and hot sauce, then pile on crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, some fresh herbs (I go with parsley), and salty cucumber. Fold that baby up, open your mouth wide, and take a massive bite! Trust me, this combo is pure perfection.

BANDAR ABBAS ON THE PERSIAN GULF

“Sosis” means sausage, and “Bandari” means from the port, so this dish is often called “sausage from the port.” It comes from the port city of Bandar Abbas, right on the Persian Gulf. Persians love to visit here in the winter, where the temperatures are a comfortable 25° to 28°. In the summer, though, it shoots up to 45°, with a sticky humidity that makes it feel even hotter!

The women in Bandar Abbas wear bright, colorful clothes, and some even wear the traditional Borkeh face mask. Many visitors take boats from here to the beautiful Hormoz or Qeshm Islands. Qeshm Island sits in the Strait of Hormoz and is a popular free trade zone, but it also offers stunning natural beauty, especially in the mangrove reserves. The island of Hormoz, once ruled by the Portuguese in the 15th century, has some fascinating ruins to explore.

The area is full of date palms and mangoes, which inspire some amazing local dishes. I’ve got a few date recipes for you to try, like a Sweet Date Omelette and Date Jam, Komaj – Saffron Rolls stuffed with Dates and Walnuts, and Marzipan stuffed Dates. And of course, I have a classic Bandari dish for you too: Ghalieh Meygoo – Persian Shrimp in a Tamarind and Cilantro Sauce.

BANDARI MUSIC

For thousands of years, Bandar Abbas has been a busy hub of maritime trade between India, Arabia, and Africa. This vibrant trading history has shaped the region, creating a multicultural mix of Arab, African, and Indian immigrants. You’ll find Indo-Iranians and many Afro-Iranians here. My paternal family actually comes from the Indo-Iranians, who moved from India to Persia many generations ago.

The people of Bandar Abbas are incredibly warm-hearted, and they absolutely love music, dance, and colorful clothes. Bandari music is my favorite—it’s so lively and infectious, you just can’t resist dancing along!

SHANBEZADEH ENSEMBLE

The musical performances of the Shanbezadeh Ensemble are absolutely stunning. They’re one of the best-known music groups from southern Iran. The ensemble is made up of a father, mother, and son who now live in Paris but perform together all over the world. They’ll be in Berlin this October, and if you’re in the city, you definitely shouldn’t miss it!

Saeid Shanbehzadeh, from Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, plays the neyanban, a goatskin bagpipe, while singing and dancing along. His son Naghib joins in with his daboukas (small drums typical of the region), and his wife Sheida dances and adds joyful shouts to the music. The Bandari rhythm is so lively—it’s nearly impossible to sit still! Be sure to check out my favorite video of them on YouTube. You won’t regret it!

INGREDIENTS FOR SOSIS BANDARI

2 onions

 oil

1 tsp turmeric*

1 tsp paprika seasoning*

8 Chilli Beef Frankfurter sausages*

4 tbsp tomato paste*

Curry* (optional)

salt and pepper

PREPARATION OF SOSIS BANDARI

Peel and halve the onion, then cut it into thin strips. Fry the onion in a little oil over medium heat. Once they turn golden, sprinkle with turmeric and paprika, giving them a quick turn. Slice the Chilli Beef Frankfurter sausages diagonally and toss them in with the onions. Fry the sausages until they’re browned on all sides.

Next, add some tomato paste and cook it until that rich tomato aroma fills the air. Pour 1 – 2 glasses of water and let it all simmer simmer for approx. 10 – 15 minutes. Finish with a dash of curry, salt, and pepper to taste, although the sausages are already packing some spice, so go easy on the seasoning if you like!

Serve it either straight up or stuffed into a sandwich with plenty of hot sauce, crispy lettuce, juicy tomato slices, fresh herbs (I’m all about parsley), and some salty cucumber. Trust me, it’s a flavor bomb!
